Is It Possible To Make Cloud Computing Less Cloudy?

We need to articulate ourselves well when we discuss cloud computing. The user community without the correct understanding of cloud will assume there is a lot of jargon thrown out there: Public Cloud / Private Cloud / Virtualization etc.

As we see Virtualization is an enabler of cloud platforms, there are lots of false clouds out there. Real cloud is always where the user is only worried about usage of resources whether it is the applications or infrastructure.

From cioresearchcenter.com – Over a year ago. These definitions still hold true.

SAAS allows users to run online applications. Off-the-shelf applications are accessed over the Internet. The vendors own the applications and the users pay a fixed subscription fee. Great for generic applications, but not for customized, complex applications for large enterprises. A real world example would be Facebook, Gmail, and online computing applications.

Juliana Payson‘s insight:

I think the Jargon’s are a reality. The differentiators between a public cloud and a private cloud is the same as that of intranet and internet which was the in thing a decade ago. If you have apps/sites/content mgmt/employee portal’s for an enterprise to be used internally, they are good candidates for moving to the private cloud.

A lot of on premise vendors are simplifying the concept of private cloud as nothing but boxes sold with Virtualization components. They claim that cloud is evolution, first virtualize, then build a private cloud and then move to the public cloud (off-site). The market reality is that the cloud is revolution and if businesses are not smart to adopt real clouds they lose the benefits of the cloud. This article published a couple days ago goes into the importance of understanding network-centric or server-centric adoption: Which discipline do you think will be more efficient and save you money in the long-term?

When cloud computing was introduced, no one asked the essential question: What comes first: the server or the network? By pursuing a path focused on individual units of computing capacity as opposed to the way that an enterprise organizes their IT on-premise, cloud has become more complicated than it ever should have been.

Juliana Payson‘s insight:

Though the same end can be achieved by either a server-centric or network-centric approach to cloud architecture, starting at the network and building out goes a long way toward simplifying integration and improving performance while controlling cost.
