Awesome 3D Visualization Tools in the Cloud

A little while ago we shared an awesome GIF visualization of what goes on inside an AMD computer processor chip. In flyby surreality some of you commented at how it looks like something out of Bladerunner, a Sci-fi movie, or futuristic Skyscrapers.

Well now, here came along a challenge. What if you wanted to create visualizations like this for yourself, without your own processor power to do so, you would have to look to open source means or the processing capability of the cloud.

The First amzing stop I found was available right on your iPhone! Sure it’s a small fee to download the app, but then you have access to the Power of the Cloud to fully render a 50 Megapixel version of your 3D fractal image. Check out Frax!

 A mathematical genius project two years in the making…

The project was an iPhone app called Frax built by long time graphics luminary, Ben Weiss. The app lets you fly around fractal landscapes and change colours, lights and textures in real-time, on a phone!

Although not cloud based, the next piece of software is truly amazing for open source code. It’s probably the best piece of Unix code ever written in my humble opinion. Check out the capability of Milkdrop. A 3D sound visualization software that plugs into your itunes, WinAmp and more:

MilkDrop

MilkDrop is a hardware-accelerated music visualization plugin for Winamp, which was originally developed by Ryan Geiss. It uses DirectX and intelligent beat detection to render iterated images which blend seamlessly.

Juliana Payson’s insight:

Trigonometric functions modify MilkDrop’s internal looping time variable, systems of logic, and interaction with the audio information received from Winamp or other applicable media player’s Fast Fourier transform can be used to govern how raytraced images evolve through time. Mind Bending!
